There is no single best extension. The right one depends on where your customers are, whether you sell beyond Egypt, what kind of organisation you are, and whether the name you want is still free. For most Egyptian businesses the practical answer is to secure the .com if it is available, add an Egyptian extension when the market is local, and choose one of the two as the main address.

Three families of extensions

  • Generic extensions such as .com, .net and .org: open to anyone in any country and widely recognised. The .com is what people type by default.
  • Egypt's country extensions: .eg itself and the second-level names under it, such as .com.eg, .org.eg and .edu.eg. They identify an Egyptian entity and are regulated, so registration involves documents and an eligibility check.
  • Newer generic extensions such as .online, .store, .tech or .xyz: it is easy to find an available name, but they are less familiar to the average visitor.

Does the extension affect SEO?

Less than many people think, but in one specific way. Search engines treat a country extension such as .eg as a sign that the site targets that country, which helps in searches from Egypt and can limit visibility elsewhere. Generic extensions, including newer ones like .online or .store, are treated as international and carry no ranking bonus or penalty of their own. So if you plan to reach customers in the Gulf or other Arab countries, a generic extension with properly linked language versions is the more flexible base; we explain that setup in preparing a website for audiences across Arab countries.

Which extension for which business?

Business typeSuggested extension
Shop or clinic serving Egypt.com.eg or .eg, plus .com
Exporter or regional brand.com
Online store.com, with .store as extra
NGO or association.org, plus .org.eg
Tech startup or app.com, or .tech / .app
Campaign or eventA subdomain of your site

Two notes on the table. First, .app and .dev work only over HTTPS, because browsers force secure connections for the whole extension, so the site needs a valid SSL certificate from day one. Second, a short campaign rarely needs its own domain: a page or subdomain on your main site keeps the search authority, the email reputation and the renewals in one place.

.com versus the .eg family

For a business whose customers are mainly in Egypt, the comparison usually comes down to five points:

  • Availability: most short, meaningful .com names are taken, while the same name under .com.eg or .eg is often still free.
  • Local trust: an Egyptian extension signals an established local entity, which matters in services, healthcare, education and business-to-business sales.
  • Effort to register: a .com is registered in minutes, while the .eg family needs documents first. EngHosting helps companies and institutions prepare and submit them; see also our .eg domain guide.
  • Reach: a .com travels better if you export or plan to operate in other countries.
  • Cost over time: compare renewal prices, not just the first year; current prices for each extension are on the domain registration page.

A common and sensible setup is to register both, use one as the main address for the website and email, and send the other to it with a permanent (301) redirect.

Newer extensions: when they make sense

Extensions such as .online, .store or .tech give you a short, descriptive name when the .com is gone. They suit a side project, a product line or a modern brand whose audience is comfortable with them. Before you commit, check three things:

  • Renewal price: some newer extensions are sold cheaply for the first year and renew at several times that price.
  • Reputation: a few low-cost extensions are used heavily for spam, so some email filters and visitors treat them with suspicion.
  • Recall: people may type .com out of habit and land on someone else's site; if a competitor owns that .com, the leak is permanent.

Should you register several extensions?

Register what protects the brand, not everything that is available. A practical set for many Egyptian businesses is the main domain, the other of .com or the Egyptian extension, and perhaps one common misspelling. Point all of them to the main domain with 301 redirects, and use only the main domain in email addresses, ads and printed material. Spreading one brand across several active domains splits search signals and confuses customers.

A quick decision path

  • Is the exact name free as a .com? Register it, even if Egypt is your only market for now.
  • Are most of your customers in Egypt, and are you eligible for an Egyptian extension? Add .com.eg or .eg and decide which one will be primary.
  • Is the .com taken by an active business? Consider adjusting the name before settling for another extension; see our domain naming rules.
  • Only a newer extension available? Check its renewal price and reputation first.

Once you have decided, follow the step-by-step guide to registering and connecting a domain.
